Little Falls Granite Works has proudly served Central Minnesota and beyond since the turn of the 20th century. In 1963, the company was purchased by Ray Calhoun, Ron Nagel, and Howard Garry. Ron Nagel became the sole owner in 1986, and would go on to acquire Murphy Granite Company in addition to Little Falls Granite Works.
Today, the company is owned by Ron’s sons, Scott and Todd Nagel, and Ray Calhoun’s son, Don Calhoun. In the century since its inception, Little Falls Granite Works has continuously grown in expertise, technology, and resources to become the Midwestern memorial industry giant it is today.
Hibbing Monument Company’s story begins in the 1930s, when Swedish immigrant David Herman Soderstrom envisioned a prosperous future for the Mt. Iron Granite Quarry, which had been largely abandoned as a working quarry after it was found to contain Mesabi Pink granite rather than iron ore. Hibbing Monument had several owners over the years, and was eventually sold to Little Falls Granite works.
Today, Hibbing Monument is run by mother-daughter team Cay Hanley and Mary Doherty, and proudly serves the Iron Range area. While the times and technology have changed since the company’s humble beginnings, one thing has remained the same: Hibbing Monument’s passion for showing care, compassion, and empathy to the families we serve.
Murphy Granite Carving began in 1968, when founder Tim Murphy quit his granite cutting and polishing position at Cold Spring Granite to set out on his own. In 1986, Tim approached Ron Nagel of Little Falls Granite Works in the interest of selling his company. Though Ron purchased Murphy Granite, Tim stayed on as a managerial advisor to help guide the company’s growth.
Over time, Ron brought on his sons Scott and Todd Nagel as well as Don Calhoun, son of his former business partner Ray Calhoun, to help helm the Murphy Granite team. Since then, Murphy Granite has grown exponentially, assembling a diverse and talented team of creative designers and master stonemasons.
Leo Koski started Duluth Monument Company in 1982, after getting laid off from his job in the mines due to the economic downturn. As the business grew, Leo expanded his reach beyond Duluth and Superior to the Iron Range and the North Shore. To this day, Leo finds the greatest gift he can receive is helping families tell the story of their loved ones and find closure.
More recently, Nicole Seybert joined Duluth Monument, bringing 17 years of experience in the cemetery, memorial and funeral industries to the team. As a Create A Legacy In Stone company, Duluth Monument is a part of a family of Minnesota memorial companies that is a North American leader in resources and manufacturing capability.
